is Greek for "beautiful view", and it is that
beautiful view that inspired its owners to blend their love of
mid-century
modern architecture with the best of Caribbean indoor-outdoor living.
Kalorama incorporates native stone quarried on site and beautiful, rich tropical
hardwoods, for a classic modern look and feel.

centerpiece of the design is a 4-foot thick native
stone wall that anchors the house and shields the primary views until entering
the house, where the spectacular vistas unfold through walls of glass. Large
glass doors easily open fully to take advantage of sunlight, cooling tradewinds
and the panoramic views, allowing the entire great room to act as a covered veranda.
is situated high atop Gifft Hill in the uppermost
section of Virgin Grand Estates. The location is both convenient - only
minutes from town and the Westin below - yet very private and secluded in a
manner more reminiscent of other more isolated and hard-to-reach parts of the
island.
rests on a knoll among abundant
mature native trees that provides unusual privacy and screens from view much
of the development on St. John - allowing guests to focus on the expansive water
views that stretch from the Atlantic Ocean to the Carribean, with St. Thomas
and numerous islands and cays in the distance. Guests can see an entire day
unfold before them from anywhere in the house - from
crystal clear mornings to full afternoon sun and dazzling sunsets.
As stunning at the villa is by day, the house comes alive at night. Almost all lighting is set on dimmer switches for dramatic, romantic or comfortable effect. Kalorama's pool glows at night, becoming the centerpiece of the house. And the views of the twinkling lights of St. Thomas are always in view.

shaded verandas and even indoors. Throughout the villa, the store-front window
system allows guests to enjoy the view from indoors and feel a part of any
outdoor activity.
plays a
key role in the design. The villa centers on a 40-foot
long pool which
features a 30-foot long bench designed for relaxing while taking in the
western vistas and sunsets. Both the pool and courtyard feature fountains
that cascade
in sheets of water, and each of the ensuite baths include large outdoor
showers.
50' x 22' great room is like no other on St. John, featuring a series of cascading spaces (kitchen, dining room and living room) that open to equally spacious verandas. The kitchen is anchored by a 13' island
and includes a trough sink for entertaining and breakfast bar, along with every
major amenity you would expect in a luxury villa.
The dining room is centered
on the pool in one axis and overlooks the living room in the other. The living
room is bordered by the stone wall on one side, punctuated by openings of various
sizes that frame the views or house electronics, cabinetry and other decorative
elements.
of the king bedrooms features floor-to-ceiling glass
doors that open fully to reveal the stunning views, but also include window treatments
that close for complete privacy. Guests can take advantage of screens and cooling
fans that capture the tradewinds or airconditioning - whichever they prefer.
Each of the king bedrooms also features a spa-like ensuite bath with outdoor
shower that opens to shielded tropical foiliage or expansive water views. There
is also a smaller bedroom with two twin beds (accessible via indoor stairs) that
overlooks
the courtyard fountains.
furnishings were selected with style, comfort and relaxation in mind. The bedrooms and ensuite baths feature plush mattresses (four king and two twin) and luxurious white linens and towels. Unlike the rattan sofas and hard cushions that predominate in the Caribbean, the living room includes two sofas comfortable enough to curl up in and read a book or take a nap. The villa also features both indoor and outdoor dining spaces that can seat up to 10.
